We spend a month at a Jeep dealership on Long Island as they try to make their monthly sales goal: 129 cars. If they make it, they’ll get a huge bonus from the manufacturer, possibly as high as $85,000 — enough to put them in the black for the month. If they don’t make it, it’ll be the second month in a row. So they pull out all the stops.

I’m not an NPR listener but I try to not miss an episode of this show.

It both makes you hate car salesmen and feel for them.

I don’t know if I ever want to set foot in a dealership again after that.
Also, how do the higher-end car brands avoid that massive sales pressure? It’s almost like night and day at some of those places.

More the latter, for me. I will probably only ever buy a car from Craigslist.

I get most of my “radio” in podcast form.

Nope. Feel dirty just listening to some of it...
Some dealers are on the up & up, but it seems to be a very small number.

It’s been a long time since I listened to This American Life. I just downloaded that episode. I’m looking forward to listening to it tomorrow.

Like I told O.C., it makes you both despise and feel for the salesmen.

Honestly, that’s how I already felt. Car sales is a shit job, and many of them do shit things in response.

Yup. I think I could be a good salesman (maybe?), but there’s no way I could or would work on full commission. I wonder how many car salesmen die an early death from stress...

I bet a lot of them do. Between the stress, and the smoking that they all seem to do.
